Of its 45,000 residents, and over 10 miles of beach side properties, the most unique and interesting place to visit among the various city attractions is the natural habitat of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in the northern end of the city. The southern area of Merritt Island is where the majority of the residential and commercial properties are located. The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to some of Florida’s natural animal and plant treasures, and some indigenous species found only in central Florida. Established in 1963, the Wildlife Refuge was founded for needed space for some of Florida’s disappearing ecosystems, including coastal dunes, saltwater and freshwater marshes, pine flatwoods, scrub, and hardwood hammocks providing living area for over 1,500 species of animals.
